Holding Midfielder

A holding midfielder is probably the purest form of a defensive midfielder. A player in this role holds his position and stays close to the team’s defence, while other midfielders move forward to attack. A holding midfielder will try to protect the own goal by disrupting the opponents’ attacking moves. Moreover, that type of player makes mostly short and simple passes to more attacking team-mates after intercepting or capturing the ball.
