Six-by-Three
Coaches like Louis van Gaal prefer to divide the field into a six-by-three grid, so that there are 18 zones on the (practice) pitch. The central strip is usually a bit wider, while the three vertical strips are divided into a middle strip and two flanks. According to the version of possession play, certain zones and positions require certain duties players have to fulfil. This kind of divide of the pitch is purely geometric.
